For thirty years, John Weller managed the career of his son Paul, from the success of The Jam in the Seventies and early Eighties, the ups and downs of The Style Council and Paul’s re-emergence as a solo artist in the Nineties. Theirs was a unique father-son relationship in the music industry, built on John’s unwavering belief in Paul’s talent and shared values like hard work and pragmatism.
At Canegreen, we started our relationship with John back in the late 80’s when he was looking for space to store Paul’s PA (in those days, personal ownership of a sound system was fashionable!). He came over to our place in Tottenham with Kenny, their tour manager. John had a look around and in his usual direct way shook my hand and said ‘’deal done’’
A few years later, he sold Paul’s PA and invited me to his office at NOMIS recording studios in Shepherd’s Bush. I remember it well- he said that he needed Canegreen to supply a PA system on an ongoing basis for Paul. He said that he’d give me £3,500 a week. Take it or leave it. I took it. That was 20 years ago!
He loved playing cards. My wife Alex and I bought him a pack for his 70th birthday. We gave them to him at his party in a swanky venue off Park Lane. His eyes lit up- ‘’Where can we get a game in’’ he asked. ‘’Will anybody miss us for an hour’’ . And that’s how long it took to get the money out of my wallet into his!!! About an hour! Every time!
The last time I saw him was at The Roundhouse in London a couple of years ago. I was told that he might not recognise me. First thing he said was ‘’Have you got a pack of cards on you Yan?’’
He’ll be sadly missed.
John Weller, rock manager, was born on November 28, 1931. He died on April 22, 2009, aged 77
